The trend towards streaming TV, movies and music is growing by leaps and bounds in Australia. Streaming allows you to access whatever you want from large online libraries where with a low monthly fee of around 10-15 dollars allows you unlimited access to content.
The way we consume media has been changing. Being tied to a schedule of TV and movies offered by traditional networks has limitations. The flexibility of watching what you want, when you want is more than a trend. It is the way of the future.
There are currently two major players on the market, Stan from Fairfax and channel Nine and Foxtel’s Presto with a third set to debut in March, Netflix. The ability to access Netflix in Australia has been widely anticipated. The streaming service is leading the way in the industry with creating it’s own popular shows like, Orange Is The New Black and House Of Cards. What about music? The streaming offers the ability to access large libraries of music to listen without having to buy or download it. What is different between streaming music services, as opposed to digital radio? Streaming allows you to listen to whole albums, and gives you the ability to customise your own playlists. Digital radio is still playlists put together by the producers of the station.
Unlike the streaming of TV and movies, most of the music streaming services have a free or paid version. The paid version means that there is no advertising interrupting the streaming experience. Recently there has been a huge number of new music streaming services on the market in Australia. A few of the ones that allow free listening are Deezer, Grooveshark and Spotify. The full list is much longer, Cnet Australia has created a great comparison list including prices.
Once Netflix officially launches on the 24th of March it will be interesting to see how the market continues to change. Flexibility and choice is what modern consumers want, it will be interesting to see what changes are made as a result of this.
